Pituitary Gland / Hypothalamus Flashcards
Where is the hypothalamus / pituitary gland?
In the brain, can get access through the nose
What are the 2 lobes that the pituitary gland is divided into?
Anterior and posterior
What is function of anterior lobe?
Produces various hormones
What is function of posterior lobe?
Stores various hormones produced by hypothalamus
What 5 hormones are produced by the anterior lobe?
- Growth hormone (GH)
- Adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH)
- Gonadotrophins (FSH and LH)
- Thyroid stimulating hormone (or thyrotrophin) (TSH)
- Prolactin
What are the gonadotrophins?
FSH and LH
What hormones are stored by the posterior lobe?
- Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
2. Oxytocin
What is job of growth hormone?
For skeletal growth
What is job of ACTH?
Stimulate adrenals to produce cortisol and steroids
What is job of the gonadotrophins (FSH and LH)?
Stimulate testicles or ovaries to produce sex hormone
What is job of TSH?
Stimulates thyroid to produce thyroid hormones
What is job of prolactin?
Stimulates breast milk production
What is job of ADH?
Stimulates water reabsorption by kidneys
What is job of oxytocin?
Helps uterine contractions during labour
What is the anterior pituitary gland controlled by?
Hypothalamus
