Other Endocrine Glands Flashcards
Where is the parathyroid gland? What is its job?
Behind the thyroid. Controls calcium levels
Where is the pancreas? What is it’s job?
Abdomen. Controls sugar levels
Where is the adrenal?
On top of the kidney
What is the adrenal gland composed of?
- Adrenal cortex (90% of gland)
2. Adrenal medulla (10% of gland)
What does the adrenal cortex produce?
- Corticosteroids
- Androgens
- Mineralocorticoids
What does the adrenal medulla produce?
Catecholamines
What components produced by the adrenal cortex are controlled by the pituitary?
Corticosteroids and androgens
Mineralocorticoid is not controlled by the pituitary. What is it related to?
Related to the renin-angiotensin system which controls blood pressure
What happens when blood pressure drops in relation to mineralocorticoid?
- Blood pressure drops
- Kidneys secrete renin (hormone)
- This stimulates angiotensin production
- This stimulates aldosterone production
What is the hormone production cycle for the ovaries?
- Pituitary secretes FSH and LH
- This tells the ovaries to secrete oestradiol, inhibin and progesterone
- Inhibin feeds back to the pituitary
- Oestradiol feeds back to the pituitary and hypothalamus
What happens during the first 14 days of the menstrual cycle?
- Mainly FSH secreted which increases oestradiol
- Lots of oestradiol will switch off FSH but stimulate LH secretion
- When there is enough LH then progesterone is produced
What happens during the second half of the menstrual cycle?
Lots of progesterone secretion
Where are the ovaries situated?
In the pelvis on either side of the uterus
Where are the testes found?
Scrotum
What are the testes composed of?
- Interstitial / Leydig cells
- Seminiferous tubules
- Sertoli cells
What is job of interstitial / Leydig cells?
Produce testosterone
What is job of seminiferous tubules?
Made up of germ cells producing sperms
What is job of sertoli cells?
- Help in sperm production
2. Produce inhibin
Where is testosterone in females produced?
Mainly from the adrenal gland
What is the main corticosteroid?
Cortisol
What are androgens?
Male hormones
What is the primary mineralocorticoid?
Aldosterone
What are the catecholamines?
Adrenaline, noradrenaline, dopamine
What are the sex hormones produced by the ovaries?
Oestradiol, inhibin and progesterone
