thyroid cancer Flashcards
cause of swelling of the thyroid gland in the neck
can be caused by an under- active or over- active thyroid gland
this isn’t cancerous but can increase the risk of thyroid cancer
the most common type is of thyroid cancer
papillary thyroid cancer
this is usually slow growing but can occasionally spread to the lymph nodes in the neck or close to the thyroid
risk factors of thyroid cancer
- high levels of radiation or radiotherapy
- a family history
- having other types of cancer
treatments of thyroid cancer
- thyroidectomy
- radioactive iodine treatment
Thyroidectomy
most common treatment for thyroid cancer
surgical removal of some or all thyroid glands
lymph nodes can also be removed
radioactive iodine treatment
kills cancer cells in the thyroid
a major function of the thyroid gland is to produce the hormone thyroxine. thyroxine contains iodine so radioactive iodine will be concentrated by the body in the thyroid gland and will kill the cancerous cells
