non-hodgkin lymphoma Flashcards
what is non- Hodgkin lymphoma
cancer that develops in the lymphatic system.
lymphocytes start to multiply in an abnormal way. they collect in the lymph nodes and also lose their ability to fight infection.
cause/risk factors of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
the exact cause is unknown but the risk factors are:
- a weakened immune system, such as HIV
- autoimmune disease
- infection of epsein-barr virus; this causes glandular fever and may be a trigger for development of type 1 diabetes
- infection with helicobacter pylori, a common bacterial infection that can cause stomach ulcers
treatments of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
high-grade lymphomas grow quickly and aggressively but respond well to treatment and can often be cured. low-grade lymphomas grow slowly and may not necessarily require immediate medical attention but are harder to cure completely.
- radiotherapy
- chemotherapy
- monoclonal antibody therapy
monoclonal antibody therapy in thyroid cancer
uses rituximab. this binds to the CD20 antigen that is present of B lymphocytes and leads to their destruction. once the treatment is over , a new population of healthy B lymphocytes develops from stem cells in the bone marrow.
