invasive breast cancer Flashcards
where does invasive breast cancer develop?
in the milk ducts of the breast and then spreading through the lining of the ducts into the surrounding breast tissue
statistics of invasive breast cancer
1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer
1 in 833 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer
what does oestrogen do to the development of invasive breast cancer
it stimulates breast cancer cells and causes them to grow so there is a slight increase in the risk of developing breast cancer depending on how much oestrogen the body is exposed to
levels of oestrogen increase in the days leading up to ovulation so women’s risk of getting it with the number of periods she has
treatments for invasive breast cancer
- breast- conserving surgery
- chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy
- hormone therapy
- monoclonal antibody therapy
breast- conserving surgery
removal of only the tumour (lumpectomy) or a wife local excision ( removal of tumour and small amount of surrounding tissue) or partial mastectomy where up to a quarter of the breast tissue is removed.
mastectomy is where the whole breast is removed and can be filled by reconstructive surgery
hormone therapy
used to treat tumours that are stimulated to grow by oestrogen or progesterone.
tamoxifen stops oestrogen binding its receptor in cells.
after menopause, aromatase inhibitors can be used to block oestrogen production
monoclonal antibody therapy
targeted therapy.
trastuzumab controls growth of cells that have the HER2 receptor. about 20% of breast cancer have this receptor and can be treated with trastuzumab
