• INHIBITS THE INCORPORATION OF IODINE MOLECULES INTO THE AMINO ACID TYROSINE
WHICH IS REQUIRED TO MAKE THE PRECURSORS OF T3 AND T4
• IMPEDES THE FORMATION OF THYROID HORMONES

- CONTRAINDICATIONS: ALLERGY, RECENT MI, ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY, HYPERTHYROIDISM
- ADVERSE EFFECTS: USUALLY RELATED TO OVERDOSE, DYSRHYTHMIAS, TACHYCARDIA, PALPITATIONS, INSOMNIA, TREMORS, HEADACHE, ANXIETY, N/V, WEIGHT LOSS, SWEATING
- INTERACTIONS: MULTIPLE COMMON MEDICATIONS TABLE 32-3

- CONTRAINDICATIONS: ALLERGY
- ADVERSE EFFECTS: LIVER AND BONE MARROW TOXICITY (LEUKOPENIA, THROMBOCYTOPENIA), BLEEDING, DROWSINESS, HEADACHES, N/V/D, RASH, PRURITUS, INCREASED CREATININE AND EGFR, MYALGIA, ARTHRALGIA

• REPLACEMENT OF TO ACHIEVE NORMAL THYROID LEVELS (EUTHYROID)
• REPLACEMENT POST THYROID REMOVAL OR DESTRUCTION FROM RADIOACTIVE IODINE
THERAPY FOR TREATMENT OF THYROID CA OR HYPERTHYROIDISM
PROPYLTHIOURACIL INDICATIONS
• TREATMENT OF HYPERTHYROIDISM TO ACHIEVE NORMAL THYROID LEVELS (EUTHYROID)
• PREVENT THE SURGE IN THYROID HORMONES AFTER TREATMENT WITH RADIOACTIVE IODINE
THERAPY OR POST THYROID REMOVAL (FOR THYROID CA OR HYPERTHYROIDISM)

* GIVE PO ON EMPTY STOMACH FOR BEST ABSORPTION, IN THE AM (AVOID INSOMNIA)

• GIVE WITH MEALS TO DECREASE GI UPSET; MONITOR FOR S&S BONE MARROW OR LIVER
FAILURE (FEVER, SORE THROAT, MOUTH ULCERS, JAUNDICE, BLEEDING, BRUISING)
