Thrombosis Flashcards
What processes occur during primary haemostasis?
Vasoconstriction
Platelet adhesion
Platelet aggregation
What processes occur during coagulation?
Insoluble fibrin formation
Fibrin cross-linking
What is a thrombus?
Clot arising in the wrong place
What is a thromboembolism?
Movement of clot along a vessel
What are the components of Virchow’s triad?
Stasis
Hypercoagulability
Vessel damage
What can cause stasis?
Bed rest
Travel
What can cause hypercoagulability?
Pregnancy
Trauma
What can cause vessel damage?
Artherosclerosis
What is an arterial thrombus?
“White clot” of platelets and fibrin
Results in ischaemia and infarction
Principally secondary to atherosclerosis
What are some examples of arterial thromboembolism?
Coronary thrombosis (MI, unstable angina) Cerebrovascular thromboembolism (stroke, TIA) Peripheral embolism (limb ischaemia)
What are the risk factors for arterial thrombosis?
Age Smoking Sedentary lifestyle Hypertension Diabetes Obesity Hypercholesterolaemia
What is the management for arterial thrombosis?
Lifestyle modification
Treatment of vascular risk factors
Thrombolysis
Antiplatelet/anticoagulant drugs
What is a venous thrombus?
“Red thrombus” of fibrin and red cells
Results in back pressure
Principally due to stasis and hyper coagulability
What are some examples of venous thromboembolism?
Limb deep vein thrombosis Pulmonary embolism Visceral venous thrombosis Intracranial venous thrombosis Superficial thrombophlebitis
What are the risk factors for venous thrombosis?
Increasing age Surgery Obesity Pregnancy Hormonal therapy (COCP/HRT) Tissue trauma Immobility Systemic disease (cancer, myeloproliferative neoplasm, IBD, connective tissue disease, antiphospholipid syndrome) Family history
