Autoimmunity Flashcards
What is the treatment of autoimmune disease?
Immunosuppressive therapy Anti-inflammatory therapy Plasmapheresis Stem Cell/Bone Marrow Transplant Replacement of lost physiological factor Organ / tissue / mechanical graft
What are the immune features of multiple sclerosis?
T cells specific to myelin cross the BB and release cytokines
BBB damage, macrophage and Tc cell migration attacks oligodendrocytes
What are sentinel cells?
Cells in the body’s first line of defence which embed themselves in tissues
What is autoimmunity?
Physiological autorecognition with secondary epiphenomena
What causes autoimmunity?
Genetic factors
Hormonal factors
Environmental factors
Immune regulation
What is cell mediated immunity?
T and NK cells interact with cells bearing the antigen they don’t recognise
Stop cells that could potentially lyse and release viruses
What is antibody mediated immunity?
Antibody binds to targets leading to damage by Fc receptor macrophage with or without complement lysis
Type 2 hypersensitivity reaction
What is immune complex autoimmunity?
Antigen-antibody/Immune complex formation and deposition, activating phagocytes and causing damage
Type III Hypersensitivity reaction
