Thromboembolic event Flashcards
What would raised JVP indicate in terms of cardiac abnormalities?
Right side of heart abnormalities
What does a D-dimer show?
fibrin D-dimer is a degradation product of cross-linked fibrin from a clot
What is the specificity and sensitivity of D-dimer?
Bad specificity - so positive does not mean they have disease
Good sensitivity - if negative they do not have
What are some things that cause false positive of D-dimer?
infection, malignancy, kidney disease
What are 5 risk factors for PE
Surgery, reduced mobilty (fracture, hospital, plane), previous VTE, IVDU, thrombotic disorder, oestrogens (COCP, HRT, pregnancy), malignancy, COPD, obesity
What are some clinical findings of DVT?
limb pain along line of deep veins pitting oedema unilateral swelling increase skin temp skin discolouration distension of superficial veins
What score would you use for DVT and PE?
Well’s score - there are two different ones!
What is therapeutic range of INR?
2.0-3.0
What is INR?
international normal ratio = patient prothrombin time/control PT
How long is PE treatment?
heparin for 3 months
What is thrombophilia?
predisposition to thromboembolism
What are common thrombophilias?
Factor V Leiden
Protein C
antiphospholipid syndrome
What are some ways to test for PE?
PERC score (<50 year) CXR Well's score D-dimer CTPA
