Reactive Thrombocytosis
and
Clonal Thrombocytosis

What (in a list) are the causes of reactive thrombocytosis?
A
- Blood loss (both chronic and acute)
- Iron deficiency
- Post splenectomy
- Rebound thrombocytosis after recovery from thrombocytopenia
- Discontinuation of myelosuppressive drugs- including alcohol
- Acute and chronic inflammation and infectious diseases
- Exercise
- Drugs, (eg) Vincristine

Describe how you would differentiate between reactive and clonal thrombocytosis
A
1.Clonal thrombocytosis would have splenomegaly as a clinical feature.
2.The platelets in clonal thrombocytosis would be appear morphologically abnormal in clonal conditions
3.Reactive cases should have no cytogenic lesions.
