Thrombocytopenia Flashcards
Most common type of acquired thrombocytopenia
Syndrome of abnormal destruction and reduce production of circulating platelets termed immune thrombocytopenia purpura. Multiple therapies are used to manage the patient, such as corticosteroids, splenectomy, Immunosuppressants, or thrombopoitin receptor agonists
Define thrombocytopenia
Production of platelets below 150,000. Can be acquired due to autoimmune diseases, increase platelet consumption, splenomegaly, marrow suppression, and bone marrow failure
Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia
of heparin can lead to this life-threatening condition which is usually when the platelet count has fallen 50% or more from its baseline or thrombus forms while the patient is on heparin therapy
Goals of a patient with thrombocytopenia
Have no gross or occult bleeding, maintain vascular integrity, manage home care to prevent any complications related to an increased risk for bleeding
