Blood Component Therapy Flashcards
Autotransfusion
Autologus transfusion, consisting of removing whole blood from person and transferring that blood back into the same person. Problems of incompatibility, allergic reactions, and transmission of disease can be avoided
Define blood component therapy
Frequently used in managing hematologic diseases. Only temporarily supports the patient until underlying problem is resolved. When blood is obtained from the bank positive identification is needed. Blood must be used right away
Reactions to blood component therapy
In range and severity from mild symptoms to a life-threatening condition. Blood transfusion reactions can be classified as acute or delayed
Acute transfusion reactions
Most common cause of hemolytic reaction does transfusion of ABO – incompatible blood
Reactions of acute transfusion reactions
Febrile actions are most commonly caused by leukocyte incompatibility. Many individuals who receive five or more transfusions develop circulating antibodies to the small amount of WBCs in the blood product
Allergic reactions, acute transfusion reactions
Result from the recipients sensitivity to plasma proteins of the donors blood. These reactions are more common in the individual with history of allergies.
Circulatory overload and acute transfusion reactions
An individual with cardiac and renal insufficiency is at risk for developing circulatory overload. This is especially true if a large quantity of blood is infused in a short period, especially in an older patient
Transfusion related acute lung injury
Characterized by the sudden development of noncardiogenic pulmonary edema
Acute reaction of transfusing large volumes of blood
Termed massive blood transfusion reaction. Can occur when replacement of RBCs or blood exceeds a total blood volume within 24 hours
Define delayed transfusion reaction
Includes the delayed hemolytic reaction, infections, and iron overload. Infectious agents transmitted by blood transfusion include hepatitis B and C viruses, HIV, human herpesvirus type six, Epstein-Barr virus, human T-cell leukemia virus, type one, so I don’t metal of Iris, and malaria
