Lymphoma Flashcards
Defined Hodgkin’s lymphoma
Malignant condition characterized by proliferation of abnormal giant, multi nucleated cells, called Reed Sternberg cells, which are located in the lymph nodes
Defined lymphoma
Malignant neoplasm’s originate in the bone marrow and lymphatic structures resulting in the proliferation of lymphocytes. Two major types or Hodgkin’s lymphoma and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
Causative factors of Hodgkin’s lymphoma
Epstein-Barr virus, genetic predisposition, and exposure to occupational toxins. Incidence increases among patients with HIV
Nursing care for Hodgkin’s lymphoma
Managing problems related to the disease such as pain, pancytopenia, and other side effects of therapy
Define non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
Heterogeneous group of malignant neoplasm is a primarily B, T, or NK cells origin affecting all ages. It is a rapidly progressing disease
Origination of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
Originates outside the lymph nodes, the method of spread can be unpredictable, and the majority of patients have widely disseminated disease at the time of diagnosis
Treatment for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
Chemotherapy and sometimes radiation therapy. Nursing care is largely based on managing problems related to the disease such as pain, spinal cord compression, tumor lysis syndrome, pancytopenia, and other side effects of therapy
