Tonsillitis
Tonsils have crevices-> pathogens goes trapped -> immune system fights off them.
Tonsillitis - when the pathogens get out of control, lead to swollen and inflammed tonsils. Two locations - Palatoglossal arch and Palatopharyngeal arch. Tonsils exudate - whitish fluid found in tonsils due to immune system fighting off
Causes - strep A virus
Complications - Peritonsillar abscess (need to be drained to prevent further infection)
Pharyngitis
Dry throat, sore throat, swollen ly,ph nodes.
Causes - Mononucleosis, Common cold, Viruses, Bacteria (Strep A)
Tonsillopharyngitis complications, Diagnosis, Treatment
Causes - viruses, bacteria, (Strep A).
Treatment - Symptomative care, antibiotics: Complications of strep throat: Scarlet fever, Rheumatic fever, Glomerulonephritis, Heart valve problems.
Diagnosis- fever, no cough, painful sore throat, exudates on tonsils and back of throat, swollen lymph nodes, red throat, rapid strep test, throat culture, Monospot test (+ EBV, - CMV / to rule out Mononucleosis)
Treatment - Antibiotics, Penicillin, Supportive - viral
Tonsillectomy
Removal of Palantine tonsils. If adenoid removed : Adenoidectomy : Reason: Chronic tonsillitis, Peritonsillar abscess, Difficulty breathing / swallowing, Obstructive Sleep apnea.
