Before democracy, just after war, no gov.

Why did the Spartacist uprising take place?
Spartacists wanted full-scale communist revolution
Did not trust Ebert or new gov.
Wanted change: lack of food, no gov., hoped the army would join them in the revolution
What did the Spartacists do?
Jan 1919 - workers protested, spartacists took this as chance to start revolution
Gov. newspaper and telegraph headquarters being taken over in Berlin
How were the spartacists stopped?
Army was called in
Freikorps - anti-communists
Over 100 workers were killed
How serious was the threat of the spartacists?
Not very serious
Spartacists had not planned very well
Had expected help but received none
But at beginning, had potential to be very serious as they could’ve taken over
How did the republic survive the spartacist uprising?
Both leaders of the group were captured and killed by Freikorps
