what is threadworm?
• Threadworms have a white, thread-like appearance — adult males are 2–5 mm in length and adult females are 8–13 mm
how is threadworm transmitted?
Transmission occurs by the faeco-oral route when threadworm eggs are ingested
what are the symptoms of threadworm>
Symptoms include, itching around the anus or vagina (particularly at night) and irritability

Less common symptoms are weight loss and wetting the bed
what are red flags of threadworm?
• Children under the age of 2
o OTC preparations are not licensed for the treatment of children age 2 and under
• Pregnant or breastfeeding women
• Recent travel to a country abroad
what is some lifestyle advice for threadworm?
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water after using the toilet, changing nappies and before handling food.
- Cut fingernails regularly, avoid biting nails and scratching around the anus.
- Shower each morning, including the perianal area, to remove eggs from the skin.
- Change bed linen and nightwear daily for several days after treatment.
- Do not shake out items as this may distribute eggs around the room.
- Washing/drying in a hot cycle will kill pinworm eggs.
what are the drug treatment options for threadworm?
Mebendazole
what is the treatment regime for Mebendazole?
single one-off dose taken orally and then followed up after 2 weeks with another dose, if needed
• All members of the household (or regular close contacts) MUST be treated, regardless of possessing symptoms of the infection
