Thorax Muscles Flashcards
Pectoralis Major- Clavicular Head Origin
Anterior surface of medial half of clavicle
Pectoralis Major- Clavicular Head Insertion
Lateral lip intertubercular sulcus of humerus
Pectoralis Major- Clavicular Head Innervation
Lateral and medial pectoral nerves; clavicular head (C5,C6), sternocostal head (C7,C8,T1)
Pectoralis Major- Clavicular Head Action
Both heads adducts and medially rotates humerus; draws scapula anteriorly and inferiorly. Clavicular head flexes humerus
Pectoralis Major- Sternocostal Head Origin
Anterior surface of sternum, superior six costal cartilages, aponeurosis of external oblique muscle
Pectoralis Major- Sternocostal Head Insertion
Lateral lip intertubercular sulcus of humerus
Pectoralis Major- Sternocostal Head Innervation
Lateral and medial pectoral nerves; clavicular head (C5,C6), sternocostal head (C7,C8,T1)
Pectoralis Major- Sternocostal Head Action
Both heads adducts and medially rotates humerus; draws scapula anteriorly and inferiorly. Sternocostal head extends it from the flexed position
External Intercostal Origin
Inferior border of ribs
External Intercostal Insertion
Superior border of ribs below
External Intercostal Innervation
Intercostal nerve
External Intercostal Action
Elevate ribs during forced inspiration
Internal Intercostal & Innermost Intercostal Origin
Inferior border of ribs
Internal Intercostal & Innermost Intercostal Insertion
Superior border of ribs below
Internal Intercostal & Innermost Intercostal Innervation
Intercostal nerve
Internal Intercostal & Innermost Intercostal Action
Interosseous part: depresses ribs
Transversus Thoracis Origin
Posterior surface of lower sternum
Transversus Thoracis Insertion
Internal surface of costal cartilages 2-6
Transversus Thoracis Innervation
Intercostal nerve
Transversus Thoracis Action
Weakly depress ribs and proprioception
Subcostal Origin
Internal surface of lower ribs near their angles
Subcostal Insertion
Superior borders of 2nd or 3rd ribs below
Subcostal Innervation
Intercostal nerve
Subcostal Action
Probably act in same manner as internal intercostal muscles
Inferior Oblique (IO) Innervation
Oculomotor nerve (CN III)
Inferior Oblique (IO) Action
Abducts, elevates, and laterally rotates eyeball
Diaphragm origin
Xiphoid process, inner surface of ribs 7-12
Diaphragm insertion
Central tendon of the diaphragm
Diaphragm innervation
Phrenic nerve (C3-C5)
Diaphragm action
Increases intrathoracic volume during inhalation
