15
Q

Levatores costarum muscles (true muscles of thoracic wall).

A

Elevate ribs. May help inspiration. May aid proprioception or vertebral movement.

16
Q

Subcostal muscles (true muscles of thoracic wall).

A

Extend from internal surface of rib angle to internal surface of 2nd/3rd rib inferiorly.

17
Q

Transversus thoracis muscles (true muscles of thoracic wall).

A

Radiate supero- laterally from inferior sternum. For expir- ation + proprioception

18
Q

External intercostal muscles - 11 pairs (true muscles of thoracic wall).

A

For inspiration. Twixt back tubercles of ribs to front costochondral junctions.

19
Q

Internal intercostal muscles - 11 pairs (true muscles of thoracic wall).

A

For expiration. Run deep to + at right angles to external intercostals.

20
Q

Innermost intercostal muscles (true muscles of thoracic wall).

A

Deep to internal inter- costals, separated by nerves + vessels. Probs for expiration.

21
Q

Intercostals (true muscles of thoracic wall).

A

For forced respiration. Also to support tonus of intercostal spaces (isometric).

22
Q

Forced inspiration and expiration (breathing).

A

Exhale against resistance. Expel/inhale air quickly. Use intercostals.

23
Q

Thoracic diaphragm.

A

Primary muscle of inspiration. Shared wall (floor/ceiling) of thorax + abdomen.

24
Q

Sternum

A

Breastbone.
