Terms of Movement Flashcards
Extension (normally in posterior direction)
Straighten or increase angle between bones or body parts
Dorsiflexion (dorsal surface is top of foot)
Flexion/Bend of ankle joint upwards towards body
Plantarflexion (plantar/caudal/posterior surface is bottom of foot)
Bend foot and toes towards ground (e.g. Tippie toes)
Hyperextension (overextension)
Extension of limb or part beyond normal limit > injury, e.g. whiplash
Abduction (except of digits)
Move away from median plane
Abduction of digits
Spreading fingers/toes apart, away from middle finger or 2nd toe
Adduction (except of digits)
Moving towards the median plane
Adduction of digits
Bring fingers/toes towards middle finger or 2nd toe
Circumduction (sequence of movements)
Circular movement involving flexion, abduction, extension and adduction.
Rotation
Revolve part of body around its longitudinal axis
Flexion (normally in anterior direction)
Bend or decrease angle between bones or body parts
Pronation (of arm and hand)
Rotate the radius medially so palm of hand faces posteriorly
Supination (of arm and hand)
Rotate the radius laterally to return to the anatomical position
Eversion (full eversion = dorsiflexion)
Move the sole of the foot away from the median plane
Inversion (full inversion = plantarflexion)
Move the sole of the foot towards the median plane
