Thoracic Vertebra - Bony Features and Joints Flashcards
Which thoravic vertebra are typical and which are atypical?
T1: Atypical
T2-T8: Typical
T9-T12: Atypical
Describe the features of a typical vertebra
body, vertebral canal, SP, facets, other
Body: Heart Shaped
Vertebral Canal: small and circular
Spinous Process: long, slender, projects inferiorly
Facets: 4x demi facets (one superior and one infeior on each side)
Long transverse process with a facet for rib
Pedicle
Lamina
Describe the features of T1
Smaller body than typical vertebra
1x full facet for rib 1
1x demifacet for rib 2
Describe the features of T10
Full facet for Rib 10
No demifacets, only one rib joins
Describe the features of T11/T12
Full facet for Rib 11 or Rib 12
No demifacets, only one rib joins
Absence of facet on transverse process
What and which are true false and floating ribs?
True: T1-T7, directly attach to sternum
Flase: T8-10, indirectly attach to sternum
Floating: T11/T12, no attachment to sternum, floating.
What joints are present in the vertebral column?
Zygapophyseal (facet) joints
Intervertebral Joints
Zygapophyseal (facet) joints
Bones, classification, movement, ligaments, other structure
Bones - Inferior/superior articulation process
Classification - Synovial Plane
Movment - Gliding
Ligaments - Supraspinous, Interspinous, Ligamentum Flavum, Intertransverse (see lumbar cards for detail)
Other - Thin joint capsule
Intervetebral Joint (Bones, classification, movement, ligaments, other structure)
Bones - 2x bodies of vertebra
Classification - Secondary cartilagenous
Movment - Little, designed to restrict movement
Ligaments - PLL/ALL (see lumbar cards for detail)
Other - IVD
