Knee Joints and Ligaments Flashcards
Name the two joints of the knee
Tibiofemoral joint
Tibiofibular joint
Tibiofemoral Joint (bones, classification, ligaments, movement, other structures)
Bones: Distal femur and proximal tibia
Classification: Modified synovial hinge
Ligaments: Intracapsular ligaments (2), extracapsular ligaments (5)
Movement: Flexion/extension, internal/external rotation
Other strucutres: Patella, medial/lateral menisci, suprapatella bursa
Superior Tibiofibular joint
bones, classification, movement
Bones: Lateral condyle of tibia, head of fibia
Classification: Synovial Plane
Ligaments: Anterior/posterior ligaments of fibular head
Movement: None
Name the 5 extracapsular ligaments
Fibular collateral ligament Tibial collateral ligament Patellar Ligament Oblique Popliteal ligament Arcuate Popliteal Ligament
Fibular Collateral Ligament
attachment, function
Attachment: Lateral epicondyle of femur to fibular head
Function: Strong, limits rotation in the knee during flexion
Tibial Collateral Ligament
attachment, function
Attachment: Medial epicondyle of femur to medial epicondyle of tibia
Function: Reinforces capsule medially
Patellar Ligament
Extension of quadriceps tendon to tibial tuberosity
Oblique popliteal ligament
Extension of semimembranouses tendon
Reinforces capsule posteriorly
Arcuate Popliteal Ligament
Attachment: starts fibular head, blends with capsule superiolaterally
Reinforces capsule posteriolaterally
Name the intracapsular ligaments
Anterior crucuiate ligament
Posterior cruciate ligament
Anterior cruciate ligament
attachemnts, function
Attachment: anterior tibia, posterior medial femur
Function: Prevents displacement of tibia/femur
Posterior cruciate ligament
attachments, function
Attachment: posterior tibia, anterior lateral femur
Function: prevents displacement of tibia/femur
