- Annoyed Philip II by wanting to marry Berengaria of Navarre to make an alliance against Raymond of Toulouse, instead of marrying Philip’s sister Alice, to whom he was betrothed. When his engagement to Berengaria was made public, Philip released Richard from his commitment to 10K marks.
- Supported Guy of Lusignan as KoJ instead of Conrad of Montferrat, who was supported by Philip
- Involved in attacks on Cyprus, Acre, Jaffa

- First march started October 1191
- Returned to Ascalon to refortify it, after military orders advised abandoning the march due to Saladin’s forces being a threat (13 Jan 1192)
- Tried again in May 1192, but they withdrew in July
