First Crusade Flashcards
1
Q
Individual: Raymond of Toulouse
A
- Travelled with the papal legate Bishop Adhemar of le Puy
- His vast wealth helped, such as at Antioch, when he financed the construction of a fort there named La Mahomerie in May 1098
- Fought with Bohemond as Raymond wanted Antioch ruled in the name of Alexius. He held on to Palace of Yaghi Siyan and the Tower of the Iron Bridge leading to 6 month long stalemate.
2
Q
Place: Edessa
A
- Fought with Tancred over occupation of Cilician towns after leaving main crusading army on 10 Sep 1097. He later left the competition and headed east to Edessa
- Invited by Toros, the ruler of Edessa, to become his son and heir on 6 Feb 1098. Toros was later murdered as he was unpopular, so Baldwin took control.
- This helped the crusade through finance (Edessa wealthy, gave 50K bezants to Godfrey), provided distraction (Muslim army diverted for 3 weeks to unsuccessfully attempt to take Edessa on the way to Antioch in May 1098) but meant loss of Baldwin and his forces for rest of crusade

Q
Development: Council of Princes
A
- Devised during Siege of Nicaea
- ## Resulted in a plan to divide the crusading army in to two waves, one under Bohemond, one under Raymond, which they hoped would make it easier to collect/steal/purchase supplies as troops were spread out over a larger area
