Q

Individual: Manuel I

A
  • Byzantine Emperor
  • Had recently signed a treaty with the Turks at Konya
  • Initially had a strong relationship and alliance with Conrad, which came under strain after conflict between Byzantine and German armies leading to violent incidents. More strained relationship with Louis - initally, Louis wanted to crusade with Roger of Sicily. After writing to Manuel in 1146 to explain their intentions, Manuel’s reply referred to an oath of homage, showing his mistrust.
