Individual: Louis VII
A
- King of France, ruler in his own right, owned Aquitaine through Eleanor marriage
- His campaign started to turn for the worse starting around 3rd Jan., when they were short of supplies. When Manuel I made markets available to them, he passed on French movements to the Turks. Markets were also expensive and drained Louis’ resources
- After the retreat at the Siege of Damascus, Louis remained in Jerusalem until April 1149 to fulfil his vow to stay there for a year

A
- Byzantine Emperor
- Had recently signed a treaty with the Turks at Konya
- Initially had a strong relationship and alliance with Conrad, which came under strain after conflict between Byzantine and German armies leading to violent incidents. More strained relationship with Louis - initally, Louis wanted to crusade with Roger of Sicily. After writing to Manuel in 1146 to explain their intentions, Manuel’s reply referred to an oath of homage, showing his mistrust.

Event: Siege of Damascus
A
- 24th July 1148: siege started well under attack by King Baldwin III and was supported by Louis’ soldiers.
- Failed quickly
- This was due to switching strategy on 27th to east walls, had no food or water and were quickly exhausted, retreating after 3 days
