Things I particularly need to remember... Flashcards
What is the equation for the formation of bleach?
Cl2 + NaOH -> NaClO + H2O + NaCl
What is a mole?
The amount of substance which contains) as many particles as there are carbon atoms in 12g of 12C
Why do ionic compounds tend to dissolve in water?
Water molecules are polar- part of the molecule has a small negative charge, and other bits have small positive charges. The water molecules pul the ions away from the lattice and cause it to dissolve.
What makes an acid an acid?
When mixed with water, all acids release hydrogen ions (H+). They produce H+ ions in an aqueous solution i.e they’re proton donors.
It has a pH of less than 7.
What makes a base a base?
They do the opposite of acids- they want to grab H+ ions.They remove H+ ions from an aqueous solution i.e they’re proton acceptors.
It is a substance with a pH greater than 7.
What is a salt?
When the H+ in an acid is replaced by a metal ion.
What is an alkali?
It’s a base that dissolves in water. Alkalis form OH- ions in water.
