What does it treat?
HTN, HF, Liver and Kidney Failure
What is the common drug?
Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ)
What part of the tubule does it work on?
Proximal portion of Distal Convoluted Tubules
What does it prevent form reabsorbing?
Na and Cl
What does blocking reabsorption cause?
Excretion of Na, H20, K, Cl; ↑ Urine Output
What needs to work well so medication can have full effect?
Kidney perfusion and GFR
Common S/E?
FE Imbalances: HypoNA, HypoCl, FVD, HypoK; Hyperglycemia, Hyperuricemia,
What to monitor?
FE levels, Blood Glucose, Uric Acid
Common dose/route?
PO (capsules and tablets)
Can you give it with food and what is the best time to give?
Yes, last dose should be before 3PM, NO BEDTIME
What drugs to watch out for when giving medication?
Lithium, Digoxin, Steroids, Cholestyramine
