thermoregulation Flashcards
why do ectotherms have a slower metabolism than endo?
they do not have to expend energy on maintain body temp
define endothermic neutral zone. in this, how would the body otherwise generate heat?
the temp range in which metabolic rate does not change to maintain homeostasis- normal bodily functions produce heat
which part of the brain is responsible for heat regulation?
the hypothalamus
what does UNCOUPLING PROTEIN 1 do in brown fat? refer to diffusion of H+ ions
as H+ is pumped out of the matrix of the mitochondria, it diffuses back through UCP1 and produces heat while doing so
what is the difference between brown fat and white fat?
brown is more iron rich (causes browning), has larger lipids, more mitochondria
what kind of animals is brown fat predominantly found in
placental mammals, new borns, hibernating animals
what does the precapillary sphincter control?- refer to temp control
muscles causing vasodilation/constriction
