Thermal equilibrium
Two systems are in equilibrium if they have the same temperature (average kinetic energy)
Thermal expansion
Degree of expansion directly proportional to initial length (L) and change in temperature (T).
Equation for heat
Equation for heat of phase change
Specific heat capacity
Amount of energy needed to raise 1 gram of a substance by 1 K.
Units = cal / (g*K)
Methods of heat transfer
Conduction = transfer of heat by direct contact
Convection = transfer of heat by flowing current
Radiation = transfer of heat by electromagnetic rays. Can occur in vacuum, does not require flow of matter
Processes:
Isobaric
Constant pressure
Processes:
Isochoric
Constant volume
Processes:
Isothermal
Constant temperature
Processes:
Adiabatic
No change in heat
