Ions Flashcards
Ions
Complex ion
A central metal ion (like Fe) is bound to ligands by coordinate covalent bonds.
Ions
Chelate
Within a complex ion, when the same single ligand has multiple bonds to the central metal cation.
Ions
Common ion effect
Application of Le Chatelier’s principle to solubility reactions. When you add ions, it shifts the equilibrium and therefore decreases solubility.
Ion nomenclature
Metal cations
For naming metal ions with multiple possible charges, use the charge in parentheses or use the suffixes -ous (lesser charge) or -ic (greater charge). For example: Fe2+ = Iron(II) or ferrous and Fe3+ = Iron(III) or ferric.
Ion nomenclature
Monatomic ions
Use suffix -ide. For example: O2- = oxide.
Ion nomenclature
Oxyanions
Anions containing oxygen. Use suffix -ate (higher oxygen version) or -ite (lower oxygen version). For example: NO3- = nitrate and NO2- = nitrite.
Ion nomenclature
Hydrogen plus oxyanions
Add hydrogen before the name. For example HCO3- = hydrogen carbonate.
