Thermo set 2 (1) Flashcards
Semester 1 year 1
What is the ΔG of H transfer during ATP synthase?
-movement of ions from high to low conc.
-pushed by excess H+ on 1 side (electrostatic)
- -ive
What is ΔG of ADP + Pi –> ATP during ATP synthase?
-trying to increase ATP conc.
-in conditions where natural tendency is to decrease ATP conc.
- +ive
How do you calculate the overall ΔG for ATP synthase?
ΔG H transfer + ΔG ADP + Pi –> ATP
What is the entropy of mixing and why?
-low entropy at start - small no. of states
-high entropy when mixed - large no. of states
-at start - all microstates are equally likely + randomly positioned, so it’s ordered
-when mixed - spontaneous, has a greater number of possible arrangements
How do you calculate the ΔG for the whole system when transferring 1 molecule from a to b?
ΔG = Kb x T x ln (Cb/Ca)
How do you calculate the ΔG when transferring 1 mole from a to b?
ΔG = RT x ln(Cb/Ca)
Is the equilibrium constant fixed or does it vary?
A fixed number for a particular reaction
Is the mass action ratio a fixed number or does it vary?
-varies
-depends on the actual concentrations
