Thermal Physics Flashcards
Temperature
Measure of the average KE possessed by particles of the system.
Heat
Thermal energy that flows naturally from ta region of higher temperature to lower temperature
Thermal equilibrium
Two objects in thermal contact with each other cease to have any net exchange of thermal energy
Zeroth law of thermodynamics
If A and B are separately in thermal equilibrium with C, A and B are also in thermal equilibrium with each other
Specific heat capacity
Quantity of heat per unit mass required to raise the temperature of a unit mass of substance by 1 unit of temperature
Specific latent heat of fusion (or vaporization)
Quantity of energy per unit mass required to change unit mass of substance from solid to liquid phase (or liquid to gas) without any change in temperature.
Internal energy
Sum of the microscopic random kinetic energies and microscopic potential energies of the molecules of the system.
First law of thermodynamics
The increase in internal energy is the sum of the heat supplied to and work done on the system
