Quantum Physics Flashcards
Photoelectric effect
A phenomenon in which electrons are liberated from a cool metal surface when electromagnetic radiation of sufficiently high radiation is incident upon it
Photon
A quantum of electromagnetic radiation
Work function
The minimum amount of energy required to remove an electron from the metal surface (i.e. The energy required to remove the least strongly held electron)
De-excitation
Refers to the atom/electron jumping from a higher energy state to lower energy state, usually resulting in the release of a photon.
X-Ray spectra
X-rays are produced when high-speed electrons, accelerated through a large potential difference, collide with a metal target, and are slowed down.
Wave-particle duality
Light behaves both as photons and as a wave
