Thermal Physics Flashcards
What happens to the spacing and arrangement of molecules from solid to gas
Spacing goes from a regular lattice structure and arrangement, closely packed to large gaps between molecules and random motion
What are features of Brownian motion
Haphazard motion
What equation explains pressure in a container
F = 2mv/ t
What changes occur to kinetic and potential energy as a solid is heated up to a liquid
As temp increases so does kinetic energy, but potential energy has very little change, when solid melts potential energy increases whilst kinetic energy is constant
What changes occur to kinetic and potential energies from liquid to a gas
As hearing liquid up the kinetic energy will increase so particles have more kinetic energy but when turns to gas kinetic energy remains constant and potential energy increases
Define latent heat of fusion
Energy which must be supplied to cause a substance to melt at constant temperature
What is latent heat of vaporisation
Energy which must be supplied to cause a substance to boil at constant temperature
Define internal energy
The sum of the random distribution of kinetic and potential energies
What is thermal equilibrium
When two objects are at the same temperature
Define specific heat capacity
Energy required per unit mass of the substance to raise the temp by 1k
State the three states of matter
Solid, liquid and gas
