Behavioral Therapy
Positive reinforcement
Reward for positive/desired behavior
Negative reinforcement
Removal of adverse stimuli - e.g. nagging stops when person does what they’re supposed to do
Positive Punishment
Do something negative after bad behavior - e.g. spanking
Negative Punishment
Remove something someone wants - e.g. take toy away, time out
Token economy
Contingency management system - earn rewards for good behaviors
Shaping
Gradual shaping of desired behavior (e.g. rewarding bxs aligned with desired behavior)
Change happens through modifying dysfunctional thought patterns, Explore thinking patterns/beliefs, When people understand relationship between thoughts, feelings, behaviors, better able to change/cope in more effective ways
Cognitive Therapy
Change occurs through assessing client’s strengths/resources, How client dealt with things in past and using strengths to achieve desired outcomes, Good for short-term problems
Solution-focused Therapy
Change occurs through increased awareness of here/now experiences, Focused on process/affect, less on content, Known for empty chair technique
Gestalt Therapy
Change happens through remodeling family organization, Family dynamics affects the problem, System approach (treat entire family system), Boundaries (diffuse or rigid) and subsystems, Therapist looks for interactions between family members, hierarchy (who’s in charge)
Structural Family Therapy
Systems approach focused on multigenerational dynamics, How roles from family are passed down, Triangulation
Bowen Family Therapy
Change happens through finding meaning in life
If people have meaning/purpose this will alleviate anxiety/depression
Logotherapy
Change happens through disempowering social forces and empowering client, Equality between client and therapist, Used with eating disorders (education around social factors influencing ED)
Feminist Therapy
Change happens through supporting clients to address problems, Client defines problems/goals - therapist is very concrete/task-oriented
Collaborate to identify tasks/plan for achieving goals, Review accomplishments/homework, More case management approach
Task-Centered/Problem-Solving Therapy
Change behavioral, emotional, and thinking patterns associated with dysfunction, uses Mindfulness, Interpersonal effectiveness, Emotion regulation, Distress tolerance
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
A model for understanding how attachment to early caregivers affects our long-term functioning, How a caregiver responds to child shapes how child view the world, Poor attachment leads to indiscriminate attachment and lack of trust
Attachment Theroy
Change occurs by externalizing problem and creating a new narrative or story which emphasizes the clients’s competencies and strengths
Narrative Therapy
Integrates a thorough knowledge of the way trauma impacts every aspect of treatment, Emotional, psychological, and physical safety are crucial and established first
Trauma-Informed Therapy
Alleviates symptoms of trauma through Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing of trauma
EMDR
Exposing client to the source of anxiety in a safe environment helps them overcome fears/anxieties
Exposure Therapies
Includes parent and child co-joint sessions and individual sessions to address and treat effects of trauma. 3 stages include: Stabilization, Trauma Narrative, Integration and Consolidation
