What is group therapy?
Has a sound theoretical base, and leaders generally have advanced degrees in psychology, social work, nursing, or medicine.
What is a therapeutic group?
Focus is on group relations, interactions between group members, and the consideration of a selected issue.
What is an open-ended group?
Members leave and others join at any time during the existence of the group.
What is a closed-ended group?
All members join at the time
the group is organized and
terminate membership at the end of a designated period of time.
What are the 3 types of member roles in a group?
Task roles - complete the task
Maintenance role - maintain group processes
Individual (personal roles) - fulfilling personal or individual needs
What is manifest function of group communication?
A direct function

What is a latent function of group communication?
A passive function

What happens in the orientation phase of group development?
Leaders and members work together to establish rules
Leader promotes trust
Members are superficial and overly polite
What happens in the middle/working stage of group development?
Work toward completion of the task is undertaken. Leader role becomes more of facilitator. Trust has been established between the members Conflict is managed
What happens in the termination stage of group development?
A sense of loss may be
experienced
The leader encourages the group members to discuss these feelings of loss and to reminisce
