Verbal Communication
Consists of the words a person uses to speak to one or more listeners.
Content
The literal words that a person speaks
Context
The environment in which communication occurs including the time and the physical, social, emotional, and cultural environment.
Non-verbal communication
The behavior that accompanies verbal content.
Process
All nonverbal messages that the speaker uses to give meaning and context to the message.
Therapeutic communication
Interpersonal interaction between nurse and client during which the nurse focuses on the client’s specific needs to promote effective exchange of information.
Orientation phase
Engaging the client in treatment and providing explanation and information. Here, the client will ask questions and seek assistance.
Identification phase
Begins when the client works interpedently with the nurse, expresses feelings, and begins to feel stronger.
Exploitation phase
The client makes full use of the services offered and the nurse aids the patient in exploiting all avenues of help and progress is made towards the final step.
Resolution phase
The client no longer needs professional services and gives up dependent behavior. The relationship ends. Patient’s needs have been met.
