Step 1: Plan & Conduct Crisis Assessment
Nurses must make a thorough biopsychosocial assessment.
Covers the client’s environmental supports and stressors, medical needs and medications, current use of drugs and alcohol and coping methods.
Assess if client has any suicidal ideations.
Step 2: Establish rapport and relationship
Initiate nurse-client relationship
Nurse maintains good eye contact, non-judgmental attitude, creativity and flexibility.
Step 3: Identifying major problems
Focus on the client’s precipitating problems (factors which possibly caused crisis) and help client identify priorities in event.
Identify client’s coping mechanisms (healthy and unhealthy).
Step 4: Dealing with feelings and emotions
Nurse allows client to vent feelings regarding event and help client to loosen maladaptive beliefs while considering other behavioral options.
Step 5: Generate and explore alternatives.
A ‘no-suicide- contract is established and various benefits of substance dependency programs are identified.
Clinician basically puts options on the table.
Step 6: Develop & formulate an action plan
This involves empowering client to achieve objectives outlined in step 5. Help client develop a viable plan.
Step 7: Follow up
A scheduled follow up is made to evaluate client’s needs after intervention.
