Voluntary I
Client is 18 years and older.
Makes a formal request to be admitted to the Psychiatric Hospital
Process must be validated by SCP or MP working on their behalf.
Voluntary II
Formal request by parent/guardian for admission of a minor (<18) to psychiatric hospital.
Process must be validated by SCP or MP working on their behalf.
Medically Recommended
On assessment, if the client is shown to be inflicted with mental illness, 3 signatures must be completed.
First one completed by parent/guardian.
Last two by medical practitioners that have no affiliation to each other or the client.
Form must be completed in 24 hours and the assessment findings must be completed in full within 7 days.
Status valid for one year.
Hospital order
Client is remanded to the psychiatric hospital for a period not exceeding 8 weeks by the Magistrate of a Magistrate Court. If in the opinion that they are suffering from a mental illness.
Hospital Order: Emergency Order
Based on conversation or physical appearance, if a member (sergeant) of the Royal Barbados Police Force believes a person is of unsound mind, they may transport said person to psychiatric hospital for further assessment.
The designate of Mental Health Officer can do an assessment to make recommendations for this client to be admitted.
Status valid for 72 hours.
Forms for hospital order (emergency order)
Pink form in the mental health nurse book
White form taken to the police.
Blue form is kept in the Community Mental Health Book.
Status valid for 72 hours.
