What are the two sociological theory’s category’s?
Structural
Social action
What is a structural theory?
Believe that our behaviour is guided or influenced by society
Due to interactions with institutions
A top down their meaning we are like puppets on strings begging controlled by large institutions
Society influences the individuals
A macro theory meaning we look at society as a whole
What is social action theory?
Believe behaviours rational and conscious thought or decision making
Choose to behaviour in certain way
Bottom up theory mending people are like puppets released from strings and are free to do whatever what they please
Individuals create society
Micro approach look at individuals and understand what’s going on inside their heads
Within the structural theory what are the 2 category’s?
Consensus structuralism
Conflict structuralism
What is consensus theory?
Believes that their is equality of opportunity and individuals are responsible for their own position within society
Structures carry out positive functions
Example of the consensus theory?
Functionalist and New right
Believe all institutions reproduce the norms and values of society
What is the conflict theory?
Believe their are groups in society that benefit at the expense of others
institution’s inly exist to reproduce these systems of inequality
Equality may only be achieved if the fundamental structure of society is alterd
Examples of conflict theorys?
Marxist- Bourgoise and Prolatariat
Femenist- man v women
Theory believes everyone should be equal
Institutions should be removed like capitalism and patriarchy in order for equality
What do post modernists believe?
Society’s changer rapidly over the past century
Institutions and forces used to guide our behaviour (gender and religion) have now disappeared
Leaving us in a confused state
Use of commodities (clothing brands, accessories etc) give us our identity’s now and as a result theirs a lack of togetherness
Believes older theory’s are irrelevant ahe are attempting to explain a society that no longer exists
