Marxism Flashcards
Who is Karl Marx?
The founding father of marxism
The modern socialism, communism and conflict theory
Made the communist manifesto
What is socialism?
An industrial wealth and generational wealth is redistributed through the elected government
-A flexible ideology ideology seeking reform through democratic process still a political structure
What is communism?
-A revelation where the government is overthrown, can be violent
-The w/c revolt against the ruling class
-Everything redistributed evenly and no one has more than one another, no such thing as private property
What is the structuralist perspective in context to marxism?
Takes place on emphasis on the structures that make up society
We are being controlled by institution
(Also feminism and functionalism)
What is the conflict perspective in contexts to marxism?
The conflict based on the powers between two institutions
-Marxism based on the power struggle between two classes
(included feminism between men and women)
What is the macro approach in context to marxism?
Society shapes individuals
Opposite is micro where the individuals shapes society e.g. interactionalism
What are capitalists and workers?
Their a 2 social classes
The bourgeoise- Own means of production, the ruining class, small and wealthy
Capitalists exploit and profit them keeping wages as low as possible
Proletariat- Much larger poorer class, the w/c, have to sell their labour (labour power) to the bourgoise in exchange for wages and salary
What is the ruling class?
The owning class- Bourgoise is the ruiking class
This is because they are owned by the means of productions, the B could decide where factory’s are located and weather they should be open or closed down
Controllers the workforce through highering or firing
What is capitalism?
-A human race we feel a sence of fulfilment to work, Marx called this species essence (part of our human nature to be productive)
-In order to survive the w/c must sell their labour for whatever they can, leading to the expand poor working conditions with little rights
-Marc said this work often factory work led to the masses feeling alienated
What is base?
The economic base (underline and determine everything else in society consisting of
-The means of production, the land factory’s raw materials technology and labour necessary to produce society’s goods
-The relations of production, the relations such as shared ownership or private care ownership between these involved with production, who controls production
What is superstructure?
Includes society’s social institutions like family, media, religion with Marc saw as primarily determined by the economic system
What is surplus value and exploitation?
Workers produce more then needed for employees to pay wadges
This extra money is called surplus value and provided profit for employees e.g. in a food chain only 1/2 burgers need to be sold to cover production cost
The rest of the sale provides profit to the owne a meaning workers who provide the work don’t actually get full value of work and are being established
What is class conflict?
Argues that this exploitation created a major difference in interest between the two classes and this creates a class conflict
e.g: the workers interest lay in high wages but this would be at the expense of the bosses profits
The bosses wanted higher profits to expand their wealth but this can only be achieved by keeping wages as low as possible
What is the dominant ideology?
The ruiling class ideology e.g. the law protecting the interest of the rui king class more then work through religion aswell w/c accept position by offering ideas of rewards like heaven for putting up with suffering
What is false class consciousness?
The fact causing the w/c to be brainwashed into accepting position failing to recognise exploration and don’t rebel
This lack of awareness is false class consciousness
