Due the conservative ideology spread by Margret Thatcher and John Majors government in 1979-1997 and Americas Ronald Regan and George Bush’s 1980-1992
What are neo-liberal economic policies?
Policies that call for less state intervention
-Privatisation so taxpayers money go to private company’s who brought state owned company’s as this means specialists can run as they know what they are doing
This includes Schools, hospitals, transport and utilities
What are neo-conservative social policies?
Traditional values- nuclear family’s and privatisation education
-Golden age of society when low crime and unemployment rates, since diverse values introduced and individuals ‘not fitting into society’ these policy’s try to bring back old values to ultimately bring back the golden age
Is the NR just a sociological theory?
No, its also political
What was the NR influenced by? and who did it influence?
Influenced- Functionalism
Influence- Margret Thatcher as she incorporated ideologies in her policies (conservative ideologies)
Key ideas of the NR?
-Rooted by neo-liberal principles (capitalism, free market and no nanny state)
-Family should have sexual divisions of labour and to be self sufficient with little to no govt intervention
-The underclass use benefits as a perverse incentive due to the welfare state

The unemployed and welfare dependant

Argued first generation of underclass were having children and were socialising there next gen of children into a workless culture

Young people not in education, employment and training
According to CM how can the family system be blamed for the development of the underclass?
The family are blamed for development of underclass as they where once themselves so therefore they are socialising their children to have the same mindset.
Lone parents and workless family’s for not provide positive role model or socialising for dependency relying on welfare system

-More likely to die prematurely as they are unhealthy

Ideas are to simplistic, ignores complexities of modern day society’s and reinforcing stereotypes with lack of evidence
-Murrays ideas are not helpful and use the underclass and other groups as a scapegoat
