Theory Data Cycle Flashcards
theory data cycle
- start with a theory
- from theory you get hypothesis
- from hypothesis you generate predictions
- you collect data
- figure out how data relates to your theory
theory
general set of ideas or a general framework that is meant to organize a bunch of ideas
hypothesis
a specific statement stating how certain phenomena relate to each other
predictions
assertion in the specific context of research designs
data
set of observations
three things that make a good theory
- supported by data
- falsifiable
- parsimonious
best support involves:
- replication
2. converging data
converging data
different labs are all finding the same thing
- research is being done using various types of methods
falsifiable
if there is no way of disproving a theory then its not a good theory
parsimonious
simplest explanation is the best explanation
how to pick the more parsimonious theory
pick the simpler theory if they both explain something equally well
- otherwise select the theory that best explains the data
