Motivation
the desire to see a job done quickly and well. This is the force that energizes behaviour, gives direction and tendency to present. Managers must understand what motivates employees.
Advantages of Motivation
Increases productivity
Improves quality and industrial relations
Lowers absenteeism and labour turnover
Workers make suggestions for improvements and readily accepts responsibility
Symptoms of Poor Motivation
Absenteeism
Poor performance
Low quality output
Accidents
High labour turnover
Lots of grievances
Poor response to leader
Factors that stimulate and Influence Motivation
Individual Needs - opportunity to staisfy one’s needs through work is motivation
Self Motivation - the drive to perform task without outside influence
Ability to make choices - some employees desire autonomy to make choices to influence their work enviroment
Environmental Opportunities - of business enviroments had opportunties for promotion
Theories of Motivation
Content Theories - School of thought is that workers are driven by needs and transformed into internal forces can influence behaviour patterns (Abraham Maslow 1908-170)
Hierarchy of Human Needs
- Physiological (salary must provide for needs such as food,water)
- Safety (indiviuals want to feel safe in their enviroment)
Belonging/Social Needs - employees want to be part of a group - Self Esteem - workers will like to be recognized and credited
- Self Actualization - employees desire to reach full potential while increasing level of competence tasks
Hezberg’s Hygiene Theory
A theory that concluded that there were factors that lead to job satisfaction/dissatisfaction called motivators
