THEORY Flashcards
Chomsky
Theory of Nativism/Innateness:
- Suggests that children’s brains are able to understand and develop to use language themselves.
- LAD ( Language Acquisition Device) a hypothetical tool that children are hardwired to be able to learn language quickly.
Bruner
Social Interactionist theory:
- Have an innate ability but require direct contact and interaction
- SCAFFOLDING: As children grow they require less adult input
Child language directed speech
- Speech patterns used by caregivers when speaking to their child. Eg. Repetition, High pitch, Name not pronouns etc. (SEE SHEET)
- EXPANSION: Development of child’s utterance into longer meaningful form
- RECAST: Commenting on, extending and repeating of a child’s phrase
Vygotsky
PLAY AND ACQUISITION:
- Links to Halliday, young people use pivots (Eg. stick as a horse - Imaginative Halliday)
- Children learn when interacting with more knowledgeable to challenge them
Piaget
Cognitive Theory:
- Theorised stages of development (See semantic acq. notes)
- Object permanence: Understand objects exist that aren’t in sight. 12-18 months.
Skinner
Behaviourist Theory:
- Children imitate adults as they get positive and negative reinforcement
POS: Reward for desired behaviour
NEG: Removing a factor to increase likelihood of desired behaviour
