Semantic Development Flashcards
Overextension
Word used to label something is ‘stretched’ to include things that aren’t normally part of words meaning
Underextension
Word is ‘reduced’ to include only part of its meaning
Categorical overextension
Name for one member of a category is extended to everything in the category. Eg. Apple and round fruits
Analogical overextension
A word for an object is extended to another category usually based on similar shape/function. Eg Ball for round fruits
Mismatch Statements
One-word sentences about one object in relation to another. Eg. Duck when looking at empty pond
Labelling
Linking words to objects when they refer, understanding that things can be labelled
Packaging
Exploring the labels and to what they can apply. Over/Under extension occurs in order to eventually understand the ranges of a words meaning
Network-Building
Making connections between words, understanding similarities & opposites in meanings
Hyponymy
The hierarchal structure that exists between lexical items
Hypernym
Superordinate - A word that is generic or general & can have more specific words under it
Hyponym
A more specific word within a category or under a hypernym
Piaget stages of C.L development: Sensorimotor
Up to 2 - Child experiences physical words through senses, begins classifying things in it. (Eg. Lexical choices when they appear tend to be concrete rather than abstract) Object permanence - Objects exist when they aren’t in sight
Piaget stages of C.L development: Pre-operational
2-7 - Language and motor skills develop and become more competent. Language is ego-centric - focused on child or used by child when no one is around.
EVE CLARKE (THEORY)
Child understand common adjectives but can grasp spacial due to how complex it is to explain
