Face Act theory: Levingson and Brown

A

Putting on a ‘face’ to be viewed in a certain way by others.
people may have a negative or positive face depending.
This may be used towards another an individual to establish a position of conversation they are in. Positive may mean making the individual feel better about themselves while negative ensures that the other speaker knows they haven’t been taken advantage of.
Positive wants to appeal to being liked by people
negative face establishes autonomy and makes someone feel like they haven’t been taken advantage of

Illocutionary- permanence of an act e.g informing and demanding e.g stating something for someone to do something
Perlocutionary- seeking to change someone’s mind and has an effect on feelings e.g may something while doing something
Locutionary- saying something with a certain meaning e.g ‘it’s so dark in this room’
