Theories Of Attachemt Flashcards
What does emotional development begin with
Attachment
When child forms strong attachment to their main caregiver what occurs
Positive self image and self esteem
What did bowlby argue in infants stage
- infants have an inbuilt need to form an attachment with a carer
- attachment in this stage effects future attachments
- securely attached infants will grow up with the emotional resources needed to cope with events
- insecurely attached infants may have reduced ability to cope with stress and life events
Secure attachments
- child will feel secure, happy and confident
- will lead to happier and healthier attachments with others in the future
- insecure attachments lead to behavioural issues
Bowlby refers attachment to…
A deep emotional bond that connects a child to their primary caregiver
What did bowlby believe
That children were biologically preprogrammed to form attachments
What did bowlby observe
-children experience separation anxiety when separated from their mothers
- when child being fed by another carer, anxiety did not disappear
- will greet parent when they return and will be happy with strangers when mother is present (secure)
Insecure/avoidant
- parent is unavailable to child
- child does not show anxiety when primary caregiver leaves
- continues to explore environment and may go to another stranger for comfort
Insecure/resistant
- child shows distress when primary caregiver leaves but resists contact on their return
- shows anxiety and insecurity
Criticisms
- bowlby over-simplified his theory
- research suggested babies are most likely to respond to those who respond best to their signals
