Q

Why is covenant theology important? (Explain as to a new Christian)

A
  • Covenant theology is important because it maintains the unity and continuity of the Old and New Testaments and their respective families of faith.
  • Without God reaching out to us in the form of a covenant, we would never be able to reach out to Him.

Q

List and Explain the “Five points of Calvinism

A

Total Depravity
- Humans are born with all aspects of their nature corrupted by the effects of sin.

  • Genesis 6:5 - “The Lord saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.”
  • Romans 3:10-12 - “There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.

Unconditional Election
- God’s choice of certain persons to salvation is not dependent upon any foreseen virtue or faith on their part.

  • Romans 9:11-13 - “Yet before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad—in order that God’s purpose in election might stand: Not by works but by him who calls—she was told, “that older will serve the younger.” Just as it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.””
  • Ephesians 1:4 - “Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.”

Limited Atonement
- Christ’s atoning death was effectual only for the elect.

  • John 10:14-15 - “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.”
  • Matt. 1:21 - “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

Irresistible Grace
- Those whom God has chosen for eternal life will come to faith and thus to salvation.

  • John 6:37 - “All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.”
  • Acts 13:48 - “When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.”

Perseverance of the Saints
- Those who are genuine believers will be preserved in their faith to the end.

  • John 10:28 - “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.”
  • Philippians 1:6 - “…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Q

Why are regeneration and saving faith necessary for the true study of theology? What is the practical importance of these truths for us personally and with respect to our ministries?

A

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

We are spiritually blind. You must be born again if you would be a teacher in Israel. How can you teach something that you don’t believe?

Q

Is theology a science? Explain different views on this subject and relate to the teachings of Scripture.

A

Yes. And No.

  • Pre-enlightenment reformers: ‘no’ Theology is spiritual wisdom, spiritual discipline how to live to God. (1 Tim. 6:3-5, Jn.17:3, 1 Tim. 2:5, 1 Cor.1-2). Thus, theology is theoretical and practical.
  • Post-enlightenment reformers: theology is more about the science of God which is neglect of practical side. As science does not consider ethics (practice or godliness).

Q

What are the two principia of Reformed theology? How do they relate to the Reformed system of theology?

A

Principium essendi - The doctrine of God, or theology proper. God as considered as the objective ground of theology, without whom there could be neither divine revelation nor theology

Principium cognoscendi - The doctrine of Scripture. Without which there could be no true knowledge of God and therefore no theological system.

Q

What is the analogia fidei? What is analogy Scripture?

A

Analogy fidei - The use of a general sense of the meaning of Scripture, constructed from the clear or unambiguous loci (places) as the basis for interpreting unclear or ambiguous texts. It presupposes a sense of the theological meaning of Scripture.

Analogy Scripture - “The interpretation of unclear, difficult, or ambiguous passages of Scripture by comparison with clear and unambiguous passages that refer to the same teaching or event”

17
Q

Why is divine revelation necessary for the true knowledge of God? Relate this to our creatureliness and to our sinfulness

A
  • Divine revelation is necessary because as creatures we are not able to know the Almighty, as Job 11:7 explains.
  • Divine revelation is necessary because we are sinners our knowledge is distorted after the fall.

Acts 17:30-31 - “Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent.”

18
Q

How are the 5 points of Calvinism apart of the biblical gospel?

A

The Biblical gospel presupposes (and explains) man’s inability to save himself – total depravity. Each of the following points help answer how God can save man in light of man’s inability

19
Q

How does adherence to Calvinistic Soteriology affect the proclamation of the Gospel?

A

Gives us a reason to pray because of the elect, to trust God is at work, and to proclaim boldly the good news knowing God will move.

20
Q

How does the rejection of Calvinistic Soteriology affect the proclamation of the Gospel?

A

It puts the burden of persuading and converting hearts on us. No basis for security in our adoption, because it could be lost at any time, depending on my action.
