Q

2 passages that support the Presbyterian form of government

A

1 Timothy 4:14 - Paul encourages Timothy to remember his spiritual gift and calling that was confirmed by the council of elders who laid their hands on him. This is reffering, not to a congregational session, but toa. Presbytery which is made up of ordained men from various churches within a geographical area.

Acts 15-16 - In Acts 15, certain men from Judea were teaching an erroneous doctrine that declared Gentiles who come to the Christian faith must be circumcised in order to be saved. They insisted that the Gentiles must follow the whole law of Moses in order to be saved. The Jerusalem council called together the apostles and elders from various churches in order to discuss the matter and come to a resolution. This is what the PCA has defined as the General Assembly. The decision that was reached was unanimous and then that decision was sent by letter to all the churches. Upon receiving the decision, the churches not only submitted to the verdict, but rejoiced in it.

Q

Ordination of women

A

1 Timothy 2 - In 1 Timothy 2 Paul describes the role of women in the church. Specifically, he says he does not permit a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man. Some might try to evade this clear teaching of Scripture by pointing out that there have been examples of women teaching in the Bible: Deborah, Priscila, etc. However, Paul makes his case, not from some cultural understanding of the roles of men and woman, but in the created order. He argues that Adam was created first and not Eve; Eve was deceived and not Adam. Therefore, according to Scripture, women should not be ordained to the ordained positions of the church. Furthermore, if you simply go to the next chapter (1 Timothy 3), you will find Paul’s qualifications of elders and deacons. In both, he mentions men, not women. Lastly, there is simply no precedence in Scripture for women fulfilling the ordained offices of the church.

Q

Death of a family member

A

Genesis 3; John 11; Romans 8:28-29
First and foremost, I would most likely be present with the person before giving my counsel. Job’s friends were silent for 7 days and I believe there is wisdom in simply being present with people who are mourning. We should weep with those who weep. Depending on their maturity as a believer, I would use Genesis 3 to describe why death exists in the world and why it feels so unnatural to us. I would use John 11 where Jesus wept at the death of Lazarus to explain it is okay to feel grief, sorrow, and pain at the loss of your loved ones. Then I would comfort them with Romans 8:28-29, that God works all things for good to those who love him and are called according to his purpose. This doctrine of God’s decree can provide great comfort to those who might be asking questions like, “why would God do this?” Although we don’t have all the answers, we can trust that God has orchestrated it for good.
