Q

What is “Covenant Theology”? Why is it important? (Explain as to a new Christian.)

A

Covenant Theology is a way of reading Scripture using the language that God himself uses to describe his relationship with man. A covenant is a binding agreement made between two parties which includes promises and obligations as well as blessings and curses. God’s covenant with man is a “voluntary condescension on his part.”

Covenant Theology is important because it:
1. Maintains the unity and continuity (Covenant of Grace; People of God; Covenant Signs; Households) of the Old and New Testaments.
2. Recognizes God’s sovereignty over history as an outworking of his love and grace.

Q

List and explain the “Five Points of Calvinism.” Where did they come from?

A
  1. Total Depravity: All aspects of human nature are corrupted by sin and its effects (Gen. 6:5; Jer. 17:9; Rom. 3:10–12).
  2. Unconditional Election: God’s choice to save certain people is not dependent on any foreseen virtue or faith in them (Rom. 9:9–13; Eph. 1:4; Titus 3:4–5).
  3. Limited [Particular] Atonement: Christ’s sacrificial death is effectual only for the elect (John 6:44; 10:14–16; Rom. 8:29–30).
  4. Irresistible Grace: Those whom God has chosen for eternal life will come to saving faith (John 6:37; 10:16; Acts 13:48).
  5. Perseverance of the Saints: Those who are genuine believers will be preserved in faith to the end (John 6:44; Rom. 8:29–30; Phil. 1:6).

The Five Points of Calvinism are a summary of the Synod of Dort. The Synod was called in response to the Five Articles of Remonstrance authored by followers of Jacob Arminius in 1610.
